Seven Foods to Avoid
How to stop feeding the virus
When I started this journey I knew there would be some sacrifice, but I did not expect to give up so many things so quickly. However, I was also in a dire state so it wasn't as painstaking as it could have been. Thinking back, I was looking forward to all of the new herbs, supplements, and foods I would incorporate into my diet but I did not think I would take so many things out. I at least knew of two items and that was gluten and soy. I tested positive for gluten intolerance and in order to heal my body these two items had to go.
As I read the Thyroid Healing book, it listed gluten and soy, but it also included five other items that needed to be taken out of my diet. They include dairy, eggs, corn, canola oil, and pork. I know! I know! Crazy list. The next question in my mind was "well, what can I eat?" The answer is plenty and in healthier ways. Potatoes that are boiled and backed (not fried), vegetables that are steamed with their nutrients being preserved so I receive the intended nutritional benefits. One of the great things about this lifestyle in this moment is how conscious restaurants and grocery stores have become to accommodate gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, and paleo diets - all of which you start to become with this diet :-). I read about how each of these items essentially feed the virus that causes the symptom of thyroid disorder among a host of others.
I want to pause and take a deep breath because I know this is tough to read and thoughtfully apply to one's life. I had the same thoughts. I felt like I was already giving up so much and this was another huge ask - when all I wanted was to get healthy. Trust me I understand. AND, I also want to say that being on the other side of healing it is absolutely worth it. I cannot believe how quickly my body began to heal once these items were taken out of my diet. Another big step was eating completely organic. The pesticides and harmful things that are put on and in our food can have a terrible effect on our bodies and result in these serious health challenges.
I took gluten and soy out of my diet in December 2017 and the rest of the items in February 2018. Since this time my body has made amazing strides in healing itself. I may not be 100%, but I feel as if I am at least 85% of the way there which is huge! I was at such a bad place that I really could not believe how I would heal, if I would heal, and how it would be done. Now that I am regaining my strength and aptitude I am learning all over again and getting comfortable with being able to live life. For so long I said "no" because I really couldn't get up, run errands, stay awake, etc. Now, I have energy and shock my friends and family because I am still up or willing to run errands and hang out.
All in all, even if you are not able to take all of these things out at one time, just start slowly. Take one out for a month and see how you feel then slowly began to remove others. Also, if buying organic is out of your budget try to find items that are Non-GMO, beef that is grass feed, chickens that are cage free, etc. There are many ways to get the best of food for your diet. Right now I am adding in dairy for two weeks to see how my body responds. I don't know if not eating these items will last forever, but I do know how life feels without them being in my diet. In the end, we know our bodies best and we have to be sensitive to them and really understand what works well and what does not.
May the courage and strength be with you to take this challenge on through completion! Your body will thank you.
